I visited Laredo, Texas last weekend.. Everyone knows / says there is drug gang violence on the Mexican side of the city which is called "Neuvo Laredo". It is almost a third world country on the US side of the border..
I brought my licensed, hammerless .38 special revolver since I was a caucasian going alone.
There are beggars everywhere.. I wondered do all Mexicans get food at stores and eat it on the side of the road?..
I also saw women and children sitting on the side of the road. no bus stop in sight?.. I gave some guy my leftover chicken and bean soup, from El Pollo Feliz Restaurante (the happy chicken).. Well i was gonna take it home but he asked for money and said he needed food so i gave it to him. He was carry landscaping tools and looked like he just jumped the border.
My ex roommate the veterinarian, Iraq combat vet, motorcyclist who rides all over New Mexico to Texas, told me it is a rough place on both sides of Laredo (Mexican and U.S.) and to not mess around there. But having run through Redford Township across Telegraph and Six/Seven Mile, Grand River to Brightmoor Detroit, as a teenager I like to think I've seen it all, but I was surprised by the poverty...
I have been to Appalachia, Johnson County, Paintsville City/Butcher Hollow (where Coal Miners Daughter Loretta Lynne is from and Billy Ray Cyrus). I went years ago (just when "Acky Break Heart" hit) with a girl whose mother was Vice Principal at the High School there. It goes without saying there is great poverty there also.
Eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee and West Virginia are mountanous and hard to farm or build on so the people are remote and were even more remote before wireless phones and sattelites, so they developed there own closed culture. Very suspicious of outsiders. Afraid to ever travel or leave home as well.
Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee have the good farmland and places to build easy. My absent or late uncle /2nd cousin Herb is from western Kentucky, and I spent 2003 to mid-2006 in western KY/eastern Tenneessee.
Yes, in the hills of eastern Kentucky, the hillbillies really do inbred and commit legal inbreeding with 2nd cousins and illegal incest, and bootleg booze and cook meth. Billy Ray Cyrus, had an uncle named Gene Cyrus, who was sheriff of the Johnson County KY, and was killed by a an incest committing grandfather. grandfather who raped his daughter, got her pregnant then raped the daughter he gave his daughter.
I saved the newspaper clipping. Sheriff Gene Cyrus was gunned down arresting the old man double incest and pedophile, rapist. As best I know Billy Ray Cyrus and Hannah Montanna his son and grand-daughter never did a song about Gene.
The WALMART workers don't speak English in Laredo..A while ago, I got a concelaed weapons permitt when my Dad died and I inerited one of his . I carried my .38 hammer-less revolver into the stores with me.. I bought ammo for my treinta y ocho, especial revolva o pistola, in Spanish since I cant recall where I put my other ammo.
Where I live at now actually, I am told there's zero crime. It is very rural, and filled with mainly tough, gun toting ranchers and huge ranch families, and very safe. In Zapata County and at the Falcon Lake border crossings to Mexico its zero crime.
My FACEBOOK page is more formal and serious than most as it has connections to school and professional life for me:
